CAN LOVE HURT?? What is your opinion on the subject?

I am writing a book and need inspiration. The two main characters have a love affair over a 20 years span, but they are not together and each has another partner. What are your thoughts, feelings about unsatisfied love? Can it hurt? Can it be forgotten? Does the circle need to be closed even if it implies infidelity?

My feelings about unsatisfied Love. Hmmm, where do I begin.
How about with My First Girlfriend. I was 18 She was 17. I loved Her terribly, fiercely, with all the passion of Youth, and She loved me as well. But unfortunately She had a serious flaw in Her character, She was a spoiled little rich girl who loved money. And I had a so-called friend with way more of it than Me. So She did something really stupid and cheated on Me with Him. After it was all over, and my heart was crushed and it was way too late She realized what a dreadful terrible mistake She had made and realized how much She really loved Me. She spent the next seven years trying desperately to get me back, to no avail, because once I can’t trust someone..that’s it for me. That was My first lesson in the pain of Love. My second was the fact that I got in a love triangle with her and another Girl I was going with after that. That was just pain all around. Everybody hurting everybody. Finally though that was over. The next year I met a Girl who I fell deeply in love with and was going to Marry, she had many problems and had had a wretchedly hard, tragic life. But She was truly happy for the first time ever with Me. I had no idea I could love someone that much. Then She was Murdered, I held her as She died. That taught Me the real meaning of pain.Love like that can’t be forgotten…never. I love My Wife now…very much, We have been together for 17 years. But I’ll always have part of Dawna (That was Her name) inside Me. Nothing could change that. i know all People do not work or feel the same way as I do, but when I truly love someone it’s forever.
